Innermost The Nick Mazzarella Trio was formed in 2008 and for several years remained one of the most active working bands in Chicago's vibrant jazz scene, performing regularly at clubs and festivals across the city, and recording three albums before drummer Frank Rosaly moved to Amsterdam in 2016.

The Nick Mazzarella Trio returns with their first record since 2015’s Ultraviolet (International Anthem). Counterbalance also finds the Trio celebrating 10 years as a working group. As you’ll hear on the title track above, the live recording finds Mazzarella, Anton Hatwich and ex-pat Frank Rosaly firing on all cylinders. Rarely do live recordings make great records, but when they do they are truly something special and “The Puzzle” is a perfect example from the album.
